Hi All-

Blog for this week due on Thursday October 1, 2015 will be the following:

This blog will be on your views of the subjects I have picked below. You will pick one from two of the topics you must pick either a pro from the first series and a con from the second series or visa-versa and talk about your views on that subject. You may want to do a bit of research to find out more information on the subject. Use a new research tools we talked about in class to find some compelling resources. Please tell me what new tool you  used to research the topics.

Information technology empowers people

Pro: Technology empowers people by giving them the information needed to live in this complex world; for example, information about their health and welfare lets people challenge those in power.

Con: Technology empowers the few who control it and disempowers the rest, for example, the majority of the world is losing access to their information, intellectual property, resources, and opportunities for advancement, language, and culture. Technology and the Internet are another way for the rich to control how the world works in order that they can control and benefit from the work of the poor.

Cyberspace and isolation
Pro: Cyberspace isolates people more than connects them, e.g., most times they are sitting in front of a computer interacting with the web and not socializing with anyone.

Con: Cyberspace connects people more than isolates them, e.g., they are using a computer to connect with others, although not always in real time.

Social Media in the Workplace

Pro of Social Media at Work

Empower Employees. Employees often feel as though their voice is not being heard. Setting up an internal social media platform can decrease corporate hierarchy. Speaking directly to senior leadership suddenly is more attainable. It encourages and eases communication, initiates a collaborative exchange of ideas, and helps eliminate business silos resulting in increased employee engagement.

Con of Social Media at Work

Increased Cybersecurity. Hackers can commit fraud, launch spam, or even launch companywide viruses through a social media platform. It’s important to protect your network with the same level of security that applies to proprietary business information. When launching an employee engagement program recently for a government contractor with a global footprint, E Group worked with their IT team to ensure that socialware was not part of their platform. Given their top secret security work globally, the alleviation of any risk was the right call.
